Statement of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano on the Tragedy in the Middle East

By Ulrike Tappeiner, Alex Weissensteiner, Günther Mathà

The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano was founded as a project of peace, tolerance and coexistence in a region historically marked by division and conflict. In light of the current tragedy unfolding in the Middle East, our university cannot remain indifferent.

We extend our deepest sympathies to all victims of violence and to those affected by the consequences of this seemingly intractable conflict. The civilian population in Gaza is living in extremely difficult conditions, and safe humanitarian corridors must be established to ensure aid and protection. Equally essential is the swift return of hostages to their families.

We firmly believe that violence can never be the answer to any conflict. Only by silencing weapons and resorting to diplomacy and dialogue can we pave the way towards lasting peace based on dialogue and mutual recognition — South Tyrol itself is an example of this.

As an international, trilingual academic community, we reaffirm our commitment to passing on the values of peace, coexistence and mutual respect to younger generations, convinced that knowledge and cooperation are the most powerful weapons against war and hatred.
