IAN3 – Inhabited Dissonance. Bozen Bolzano 1922-2025

“Inhabited Dissonance” rethinks Bolzano’s fascist architectural heritage through art, exhibition and dialogue in public space.

By Giulia Maria Marchetti, Matteo Vegetti

“Inhabited Dissonance. Bolzano 1922–2025”, a project by the Faculty of Design and Art, is a critical examination of the architectural legacy of fascism in Bolzano. Through a combination of curatorial practice — in collaboration with BAU and Lungomare — and participatory formats, the project explores how this architecture can be reinterpreted as a testament to a controversial past that continues to resonate in the collective memory.

The project comprises an exhibition and temporary artistic interventions by the artists Ela Spalding, Eduard Freudmann, and Stefano Graziani in Bolzano's public spaces; a symposium at the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) on dealing with the dissonant legacy of dictatorial regimes; and a publication documenting scholarly research on the city of Bolzano, including transferable approaches for comparable contexts.
