By Arturo Zilli
This comprehensive document provides an overview of the most important research projects, introduces new Faculty members, highlights awards received by professors and researchers, and details collaborations with companies and institutions in South Tyrol and beyond. As of today, the new Research Report of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is available online.
This year's document, showcasing the university's commitment to high-quality research, also includes interviews with the deans of the five Faculties and the directors of the eight Competence Centres at unibz. This is a new addition compared to previous editions, where the heads of these institutes discuss their achievements over the past year and outline the research directions they plan to pursue soon.
“2023 was a year full of challenges and very significant for unibz, which has undertaken a major restructuring with the creation of two new faculties, enhancing its academic profile and visibility. In terms of external funding, last year was another success, with over 200 new research projects launched, supported by €15.2 million in external funding. Most of this funding comes from competitive tenders, including 18 European projects (€ 6.2 million) and 47 PRIN projects projects (€ 3.1 million). There were 76 research contracts with companies (€ 1.7 million), highlighting the university's strong connections with local industry,” explain President Prof. Ulrike Tappeiner, Rector Prof. Paolo Lugli, and Vice-Rector for Research Prof. Johann Gamper in the foreword to the Report.
They also underscore the importance of research for the university's standing in various rankings, both Italian and international: “Thanks to our research efforts, the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano ranked first among small, non-state universities in Italy in the 2023 CENSIS ranking and improved its position in the Times Higher Education global rankings.”
