"Homecoming. Reconnecting, Remembering, and Reviving the Pioneer Spirit"

Thinking back to my university years, I feel the same as many others – I am instantly flooded with memories. When I started my studies at unibz in 2001, much was uncertain. Like almost everyone in my year, I didn't really know what to expect. But that was precisely what made it so exciting. We were pioneers at a young university, and this pioneering spirit truly captivated us all. Looking back, I can say without hesitation: those years shaped me profoundly. Watching the university evolve and flourish while we were still students was not just exciting – it was exhilarating.
Sometimes you ask yourself, what has remained of that time? For me personally, the spirit of those days is still the same. Like many of my fellow students at the time, I was always drawn back to Bolzano. A trip there was regularly on my personal “bucket list” and over the years more and more interesting contacts have developed around the university that I never expected. At some point, it wasn’t just my fellow students who brought me back to South Tyrol, but also new acquaintances and a strong network of like-minded people.
The only downside was that I always missed many friends and colleagues on my trips to Bolzano. Personally, I often wondered why there is no American-style “homecoming” in Bolzano.
This idea first struck me during my MBA studies when I spent an exchange semester at the Tuck School of Business in New Hampshire (USA). There, I experienced how alumni and students gathered for a Homecoming event, exchanged ideas, and learned from one another across generations. Graduates shared valuable career advice, helped students navigate their paths, and strengthened the network. What made it truly special? The shared belief in the power of community – a feeling that transcended generations.
Whenever I talk to unibz graduates, I feel this identification. Hardly anyone I know does not enjoy returning to South Tyrol and the university. When I first heard about the idea of an Alumni Homecoming at unibz in 2020, I was excited and immediately involved. This was exactly what had been missing: a dedicated occasion to reconnect with former and current students, relive memories, and gain new perspectives. For me, unibz has a unique spirit – like what I experienced in the USA. Unfortunately, not lived to the same extent.
In recent years, I have attended every Alumni Homecoming event – and this year, my spot is already reserved. It’s the perfect opportunity to reconnect with old friends and establish new connections. I particularly appreciate the concept of morning discussion panels, where current topics are explored from various perspectives. Engaging with alumni, whether from my own cohort or other generations, always provides valuable insights and fresh ideas.
I hope that this year, many alumni will participate once again. A network thrives on activity and engagement – and that is exactly what an Alumni Homecoming is all about. It brings people together, fosters knowledge exchange, and strengthens the community far beyond the university years.
Personally, I'm looking forward to the event just as much as I am to the Aperitivo at Waltherplatz with old fellow students and new contacts. So, see you all in April.
